Matthews

Neighbors Charlotte to the southeast

The town of Matthews neighbors Charlotte to the southeast and is also in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

The area that is now Matthews was a small cotton farming community in the 1800s and was originally named Stumptown after residents cleared out all the trees in the area leaving only stumps. In 1879 the town was incorporated as Matthews in honor of Edward Watson Matthews, a director of the railroad that brought the first train through the area in 1874.

Today, Matthews is one of Charlotte’s largest suburbs with nearly 27,000 residents. The area caters heavily to families.
